The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong - Cantonese Opera in the Civil and Martial Traditions
Description
Two classic Cantonese Operas, The Legend of Purple Hairpin from the civil category and Thunderous Battle Drums from the martial category, will be performed in their original full-length version on two evenings respectively. The cast of ‘six pillars’ will feature both veteran and young actors, aims to present the new generation of local Cantonese Opera talents and demonstrate the successful passing of the baton from the older to the younger generation of Hong Kong Cantonese Opera.
The Legend of Purple Hairpin
The talented scholar Li Yi from Chang'an and Huo Xiaoyu mutually admire each other, with the purple hairpin as their pledge of love. However, after being made the top scholar, Li Yi is sent by Marshal Lu to enlist in the frontier. Three years later, the marshal plots Li Yi to marry his daughter, and has his friend Cui Yunming beaten to death after he refused to act as the matchmaker. Li Yi refuses the arranged marriage by swallowing the hairpin. With the help of the righteous Yellow Robe, he reunites with Xiaoyu and the two reconciles. While Li Yi is then taken back to the marshal’s residence and forced into marriage, Xiaoyu barges in to fight for her lover. Arriving timely, Yellow Robe reveals himself to be the Fourth Lord and harshly rebukes the marshal, the two have eventually come to a happy ending.
Thunderous Battle Drums
During the Warring States period, the State of Zhao is invaded by the State of Qi. In exchange for assistance, Zhao's young crown prince is made political hostage to Qin. Princess Cuibi of Zhao appoints Xia Qingyun as the senior general to lead the resistance. Upon Xia’s triumphant return, the princess gives him her sword as a token of love. But the King of Qin covets Princess Cuibi's beauty and forces her to marry him by threatening to harm the young prince. After learning the truth and confronting the King of Qin in battle, Xia ultimately winning both in war and in love.
